As most Americans, I have been following the latest economic news with great interest. For the first time in history, many of us have watched the value of our homes fall in combination with declines in the worth of our longterm investment vehicles like 401k accounts. The majority of the "solutions" being offered by our elected leadership seem to be based around the notion of doing whatever is necessary to make sure that everybody who is on the hook for some type of debt is able to pay that debt… Continue

My love of Jon Stewart now knows no bounds.
Some suggest that Jim Cramer came on in good faith to "take his medicine". I see it completely different. Cramer came on with an ego that lied to him. He believed he could glad-handle the simple minded comedian. After all, he is the Wall Street Wiz who rode hedge funds into millions of dollars. Plus, the dictates of television would demand Stewart back down. That's what all the other "journalists" do. They don't confront. so, Jim expected a free ride.… Continue
So YTD, my 401k is down 30% in investment performance... I am talking down 5 figures. I keep telling myself that I need to simply continue to dump money into the same index funds that are performing so badly- with the rationalization that I am buying cheap, that I am reducing the average cost per share of the funds on the way down, that once this sucker turns around, I'm in for greater returns than the folks that are pulling out now. Problem is, I am not sure that the market is close to h… Continue

So I started downloading Oprah & Friends on iTunes, and the first thing I got was her interview with a woman by the name of Byron Katie. Apparently she's got all these books out, one in particular being Loving What Is.
Her whole M.O. involves what she calls "the work"; I've listened to it several times now and it's becoming very interesting to me. As she explains it, the work one does to challenge dissonance one feels about something involves processing through four questions:
1. Is it (wh… Continue

The notion of a dangerous combination of being plus-sized, Black and female; even when I wasn't "out there" I could sense it--this idea that I had no right to innocence due to things I could not control...here's part of an essay written from one young man's perspective; not sure if his clarification makes me feel any better about it, but it's definitely an interesting read:

anybody else see any major positive changes occurring in the economy? Nope? Me neither.
Sure it helped me pay my rent that month, but...what was the point of that again? Continue

VERY interesting article on the fear of Whites regarding an Obama presidency...Basic Premise? A "We Are The World" liberal white guy who can't seem to understand why he's afraid of a Black president being elected, except to say that it may "take Whites down a notch".

Each celebrity chef on Supper Club with Tom Bergeron has the luxury of planning eco-meals well in advance, but sometimes we regular folks have to pull a meal together with little time to spare. Avoid last minute freak out sessions by stocking your pantry with a few essential items so that you can pull together quick and healthy green meals in a flash.

An excerpt:
You know, sometimes I'll go to an eighth-grade graduation and there's all that pomp and circumstance and gowns and flowers. And I think to myself, it's just eighth grade. To really compete, they need to graduate high school, and then they need to graduate college, and they probably need a graduate degree too. An eighth-grade education doesn't cut it today. Let's give them a handshake and tell them to get their butts back in the library!
It's up to us - as fathers and parents - to i… Continue
I've been wanting to discuss this book and film for awhile. So, indulge me. Anyone read it, yet? And I haven't had a chance to watch the whole film yet, but will in the next day. However, I've seen the author on many programs and to say I'm intrigued is an understatement.
Let's discuss the business of disaster.
Your thoughts?

“Greed subsumes love and compassion; living simply makes room for them. Living simply is the primary way everyone can resist greed every day.”
bell hooks, All About Love – New Visions
Can one live simply and be wealthy? Are these contradictory concepts? Is it possible to have a rich life, filled with compassion and love and be wealthy?
I recently read Overcoming Underearning, A Five-Step Plan to a Richer Life by Barbara Stanny. Stanny defines an underearner as someone who feels… Continue
From MSNBC. You know what I think is crazy? That the idea of not being totally dependent upon the grocery store and other sources somehow makes the "survivialists" crazy. Not to long ago Americans knew how to eat without a prepackaged box in front of them. That's not too insane to me.
However, I continue to wonder how to bring the idea of sustainability and life skills to minority/urban cultures who may not have 20 acres of land lying around.

Greetings, Ya'll.
I'm officially honoring the National Day of Silence today...which is why I thank the powers that be for the advancement of technology that allows me to evoke this dialogue. At this point I'm sure we've all heard the news about the 3 cops being acquitted for the murder of Sean Bell, the young man out of NY who was shot to death on the early morning of his wedding day. I liken my feelings on this (as one who's father left this Earth in a similarly mysterious, yet heinous fashion… Continue
An article that offers case in point:

Barack Obama is master of the new Facebook politics
Andrew Sullivan
Last Tuesday night, as the results from Kentucky and Oregon gave both the Clinton and the Obama campaign something to feel good about, another statistic blipped up on the television. In April the Obama team had raised a further $31m (£15.8m) for its campaign. The Clintons managed $20m - and the broader financial picture was even grimmer for Hillary.… Continue

All my life I thought I was crazy. To me, it all works together. "It" being ideas and movements. To me, you cannot have history without an understanding of philosophy and you need them both to truly understand economics and astronomy and it all plays together in any really learned understanding of anything of substance. But school said you had to drill down and focus. Culture said you had to decide early and specialize forever. But I wanted to explore the relationships and interconnectedness of… Continue

Economic Suicide
Amitai Etzioni
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/amitai-etzioni/economic-suicide_b_100848.html
The other day I was playing with my time machine and came across an essay by a highly respected historian, written in 2020, in which she summarized the economic developments in the United States in the final years of the preceding decade (that is, between 2006 and 2010). By allowing the price of oil to skyrocket and doing extr… Continue
She talks too fast in some places but she gets a lot of information across and clearly conveys the exactness of her cause and the passion with which she supports it. MC has created an organization with legs and real clout because she has focussed on the whole picture rather than a small peice of the puzzle.
The question of replicability is crucial here: SSB exists because Majora is from there, she knows the neighborhood and she knows the issues, and the people in the neighbo… Continue
